GIS for Regional Planning
With support from several
other university units, we are implementing a Regional Data Center Program
designed to assist North Carolina local governments with planning for
environmentally sustainable economic growth. These projects involve
compiling and providing access via the World Wide Web to a wide variety
of data on subjects such as socioeconomic and population trends, natural
resources and environmental factors, recreation resources, and transportation
infrastructure. World Wide Web users can create, view, query, and print
maps displaying data they select. Some of the data will be available
for download.
Examples of these databases
include the Upper
Neuse Region Data System, the Western
North Carolina Data System, and the Red
Wolves of Alligator River Database. More online databases can be
found here: NCSU IMS Links.

The Upper Neuse Region Data
System is a prototype project aiming to assist communities in North
Carolina with planning and managing their development. Initially, this
data collection encompasses a 14-county area surrounding the Research
Triangle. This region incorporates the core counties of the Research
Triangle, Triangle J Council of Governments, and Upper Neuse River Basin.
The following counties are included in the region: Alamance, Chatham,
Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Harnett, Lee, Nash,
Orange, Person, Wake, and Wilson.

This database contains numerous
layers of socioeconomic and natural resource data, and data on the built
environment relevant for regional planning. The database will provide
a foundation for decisions concerning the wise use of resources for
long-term economic growth and quality of life. The maps in this database
are organized by subjects. Following are the subjects initialy included
in the database:
Each map contains data themes
related to the broad subject area. Data has been collected through cooperative
agreements with state, local, and federal government agencies and from
a variety of other sources. This information can be viewed in map form
using ArcView Internet Map Server produced by Environmental Systems
Research Institute (ESRI). World Wide Web users of the prototype system
can explore, create and query maps displaying information about the
Upper Neuse Region. To display a map, click here: The

The Western North Carolina
Data System is a prototype project aiming to assist communities in North
Carolina with planning and managing their development. This data collection
encompasses a 24-county area in the Western North Carolina Region. The
following counties are included in the region: Ashe, Alleghany, Avery,
Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson,
Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Surry,
Swain, Transylvania, Yancey, Watauga, and Wilkes.

This database contains numerous
layers of socioeconomic data, natural resource collection, and data
on the built environment relevant for regional planning. World Wide
Web users can, explore, create, query, and print maps displaying information
about the Western North Carolina. Interactive mapping is made possible
by the ArcView Internet Map Server extension produced by Environmental
Systems Research Institute (ESRI). Users do not have to install anything
on their systems to use this database. This database can be used on
any hardware platform with a Web browser that supports Java. To display
